    Hi LeAngler,

A standard set up isn't much good for competition, normally the amateurs still have themselves kitted out with some heavier gear. The heads are usually Carron lines of 11/12 95 ft heads cut at approx 75 feet, start at 80 feet and work back until it feels right for the rod. Rods are usually Carron 11 weight rods. Running line is usually Varivas mono. There is a 40 degree angle change and you are wading in water.
Too bad the only people who know how to run the country are busy driving cabs and cutting hair.

Robert, this might sound silly but when you say 40 degree angle change what exactly does that mean, is it 40 degree of each shoulder. Usualy when im fishing i would be more or less fishing that angle of the right shoulder.

Most casters are right handed, the course is set up for right hand uppermost on the rod. The line is placed to the left of a buoy in the water on the left hand side. The caster lifts the line from there, the final delivery or forward cast will be made forty degrees to the right of where the line was lifted, and to the right of the measuring rope. The wool landing inside or to the left of the rope disqualifies the cast as it will not have been 40 degrees. A Single Spey cast is used.
